Psoriasis Treatment

The Psoriasis Center at Rustad Dermatology

psoriasis treatmentPsoriasis is a chronic but very manageable skin condition, with proper treatment.  However, many patients have given up and learned to live with their psoriasis, because their treatment options have been limited to topical steroids, which may have stopped working.  Other “psoriasis” patients actually have potentially curable skin conditions.  We have designated a part of our practice exclusively to the diagnosis and treatment of psoriasis.  The Psoriasis Center is unique in Nebraska, Here, we provide the most accurate type of diagnosis and offer all modern psoriasis treatment options, including customized compounds, light treatments and modern biologic therapy.

Traditional Steroid Treatment

Traditional steroid treatment of psoriasis can be time consuming, expensive, frustrating, have side effects, and may stop working.

Traditional psoriasis treatment often consists of topical steroids or cortisone creams alone.  For some patients with mild psoriasis, these may be perfectly appropriate.  However, there are significant limitations to using topical steroids alone – called “monotherapy”.  First, it can be time-consuming, particularly if you have large areas to treat.  Second, it can be expensive, as many of the stronger topical steroids have increased drastically in price over recent years, and frustrating to get them as insurance companies refuse to cover some steroids without additional documentation from the doctor.  Third, is may stop working as well as it once did, as your skin becomes “used to” a given strength of steroids – a phenomenon called “tachyphylaxis” – requiring increasingly strong and expensive classes of steroids.  Finally, topical steroids, like all medications, have potential side effects, particularly if over-used, such as red, shiny, thin skin (steroid atrophy), stretch marks (striae), and allergy to the steroid itself causing the rash to get worse (contact dermatitis), which can be very difficult for a non-dermatologist to diagnose.
